- See pics attached. Upon initial inspection technician observed no check engine light remaining on but felt what I felt like engine misfiring rough idle. Technician check engine oil level and condition both are good. Technician retrieved diagnostic trouble codes: P0302 – CYL 2 MISFIRE PENDING. Inspecting cylinder 2 and we'll be observing cylinder 2 fuel ignition and misfire data. This vehicle has too low of mileage to have any worn-out components, so will be inspecting for something damaged. Also will check for technical service bulletins regarding this cylinders misfire. Found that these vehicles with this engine began having troubles with spark plugs ignition coils and plenum gaskets back at between 25000 and 30000 miles. Inspecting further. Note this is an m d s engine, but cyl 2 is not an msd cylinder. Found fuel trims and fuel injector pulse width no different 4 cylinder 2 or bank 2 than Bank 1. Observed misfire data and can see cylinder to actively misfiring at idle. With idle raised no further misfiring occurs. When let Idol again no misfires occur for approximately 2 mins then cylinder to begin running misfires up again. Also note that at one point Cylinder 6 had a couple of misfires but not nearly as many as cylinder 2. RECCOMEND: Disassemble as necessary to perform compression test of all cylinders for comparison with cyl 2. If all are good, then recommend, ********AS FIRST STEP*******, replace all 6 coils and spark plugs then re-test. *********ALSO NOTE: while the intake plenum is off of the vehicle since the oil filter cooler assemblies on these leak and fail all the time customer may wish to consider having that replaced for a small amount of additional labor and of course the additional part, now, again, WHILE the intake plenum is already off.
- REMOVED ALL SPARK PLUGS. ALL PLUGS WORN / RUSTY…ISH IN APPEARANCE. PERFORMED COMPRESSION TEST DRIVERS SIDE BANK AND FOUND: CYLINDER 2 COMPRESSION – 75 PSI CYLINDER 4 COMPRESSION – 150 PSI CYLINDER 6 COMPRESSION – 150 PSI SPRAYED ENGINE OIL INTO CYLINDER 2, WHICH WAS THE MISFIRING CYLINDER, AND IS ALSO THE CYLINDER THAT IS HAVING LOW COMPRESSION BY 1/2 OF THE OTHERS, AND THE COMPRESSION CAME UP TO 100 PSI. SUSPECTING THAT DUE TO MISFIRING, CYLINDER MAY HAVE BEEN WASHED OF OIL, GOING AHEAD AND REASSEMBLING TO RE-TEST TO SEE IF SPARK PLUGS AND COILS IS ALL THAT IS NEEDED, OR IF ANY FURTHER MISFIRING, DUE TO MECHANICAL FAILURE OR MECHANICAL FAILURE DEVELOPING, WILL NEED TO BE ADDRESSED. REASSEMBLED. HAS LESS MISFIRES CYLINDER 2 NOW, BUT NOT ZERO MISFIRES. RECOMMEND CUSTOMER PUT MILES ON TO SEE IF MISFIRING GETS ANY BETTER ON ITS OWN.
